Are You in A Style Rut??
Have you been wearing the same three outfits on repeat for the past 6 months of lockdown? Are you paying way less attention to how you dress and get ready for your day because you know you're probably not going to be seen by anyone? I know I have definitely caught myself doing the same. It's easy to put off getting ready when you're staying at home without the usual outings that used to accompany everyday life. If you're unemployed at this time (like I am haha...), it can feel even harder because you feel like there is honestly nothing in your day to get put together for.
But getting ready doesn't have to mean you're pulling out all of the stops. It just has to mean that you're putting effort into how you dress so you can influence the way you feel and go about your day. By no means am I saying that anyone HAS TO get dressed in a full look to have a good day. But speaking from personal experience, I feel so much more motivated, positive and creative when I have on a sick outfit that reflects my mood and interests. So, if you're going through an outfit slump, here are some tips that I use all the time that help me to stay feeling bold, unique and confident in my skin.

1. Play with Gender
Stepping out of your comfort zone when it comes to how you typically would dress is an AmAzInG way to get into a new wave of style. I am not saying to dress in any way that will make you feel uncomfortable and that is not true to yourself. However, I think there is a lot to be explored and discovered about your personal style in dressing either more feminine, masculine or androgynous in a way that you're not used to. Some examples of this could include wearing a men's button down to layer with, wearing baggier pants than you would normally go for, wearing more fitted pants than you would normally go for, mixing patterns in a way you wouldn't normally or even mixing a hyper-feminine piece (like a floral top) with some printed, baggy pants.

2. Use Accessories in Unexpected Ways
This next tip is something that goes really far in making you feel unique and different, without putting in the effort of changing your entire look. You can use accessories in so many ways, most often in ways they are not meant to be used. For example, scarves can be worn around your neck, as a headband, or even a shirt! You can use a hair-tie or scrunchie to tie up your favorite oversized tee and tuck it into itself so it looks seamless and natural. You can even layer and necklaces around your wrists or ankles to give a super sick layered effect to your look!
3. Try out a Look Inspired by Your (Not-so) Favorite Era
We all have past eras of fashion that we absolutely adore and can't stop drawing inspiration from. But, we also have those decades that we skip around and pretend never existed in the first place. But I can guarantee you that if you open up your mind just a little bit, you can find one distinct trend you absolutely love from any era in time if you look for it. Take the '80s for an example. I hate big hair, despise neon tights, and avoid high heels as much as humanly possible. However, I am in love with an acid wash pair of jeans and the advent of bodysuits in this era.

4. Dress Like Your Favorite Album Sounds
This tip may seem a bit abstract, but I promise that if you follow it, you will feel funky, yet authentic to yourself in a whole new way. What's your favorite album? Genre? Artist? Something had to have come to mind for at least one of these questions. Think about that piece of music or artist. What is it about them that you love so much and are inspired by? Is it the physical aesthetic of the album art/artist? Or is it about the feeling you are surrounded by when you listen to it/them? You don't need to become a carbon copy of an artist you admire, but you can pick up a new trick or two. If I'm in a shoe-gaze phase, I dress in warm colors with fuzzy, soft textures (cuz listening to it makes me feel warm and fuzzy). If I am on a David Bowie kick, I remind myself to reach for bold, androgynous pieces that make me feel like an angel and alien all at the same time. You can take this tip as far or as minimal as feels right to you!
5. Monochrome Look
There are classic rules of fashion that tell you not to wear too much of the same at one time. But I think fashion "rules" are pretty much bullshit. You can wear every single piece of the same color if that's what you want to wear. I think that choosing different pieces of different shades of the same color is an easy way to make a monochrome look more dimensional and exciting. You can also wear different textures of the same color! Like in the picture of me below, you can rock velvet, corduroy, cotton, denim or even silk at the same time, in the same color, to really shake up your one color vibe.
